Speed run of Battletoads done on approx. November 20 2004. Available in three versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60 fps high quality.
Author's comments:
As difficult as it is, Battletoads is really not a game suited to speed-running--more of the game than you realize upon playing through it scrolls at a fixed (Turbo Tunnel) or at least pseudo-forced (The gear sections of the Terra Tubes) speed. Nonetheless, I AM speed-running here (Though not particularly well, admittedly--this was done with the intention of it being the inaugural record for the game at Twin Galaxies), and I figured most people would be amazed to simply see the game beaten legitimately.
Level by level commentary:
Ragnarok's Canyon (Level 1): The rapeling scene can't be skipped, unfortunately, which doesn't help my time to begin with. Nonetheless, this only serves as a warp to level 3 really, but for the few seconds I'm in the level, I do pretty well.
Turbo Tunnel (Level 3): The first section goes pretty well. As for the second, it's forced-scroll, but I do some amusing things that aren't overly risky. (Skipping some of the ramps) Just watching the level beaten on a console will probably be enough for a lot of people anyway. ;) The second section is also the first section of the game that gives Battletoads its reputation as being "frakin' impossible". I opt to complete the level rather than warp to level 5, as this is the route the tool-assisted guys use..say what you will about tool-assisted videos, but those guys have done their homework as much if not more than any speedrunner.
Arctic Caverns (Level 4): Goes pretty well..there are some minor mistakes early on, and I take a safe route as opposed to the fast one at the end of one section (Letting the snowman knock down the wall for me rather than picking up the ice). I kill myself after missing the warp to level 6 on the first try, which costs me almost no time, maybe 5-10 seconds tops.
Karnath's Lair (Level 6): More forced-scroll goodness, in a sense. Again, serves as little more than a portal to another level.
Intruder Excluder (Level 8): Silly death early in the level costs me some time. Oops. Beyond that, everything goes pretty well, as I even take down Robo-Manus in one life.
Terra Tubes (Level 9): Personally, I find this to be the game's hardest level (And it's oddly never mentioned in lists about such things), but I book through it pretty well. Again, the gear sections are at a pseudo-forced speed, as I have to wait for each gear to crash before going onto the next one. I also manage to miss a shortcut at one point, as I try and fail to maneuver between two spikes (Man, I'm actually embarassed about this run now). The eels I fight are because it's safer and only costs me a second for two for each. I skip the 1-up on my last time through the level because of Twin Galaxies rules preventing me from collecting a given 1-up more than once (That last death is also a great example of why this level is so hard; you can do everything right and still get screwed).
Rat Race (Level 10): My favorite level in the game, and it generally shows in the execution until the third race. Again, though, I only lose a second or two on the mistakes. General Slaughter goes down pretty easily, and I think that's the fastest way to do it with one player; it's certainly the easiest.
Clinger Winger (Level 11): Another pseudo-fixed-scroll, "How does ANYONE beat this?!" level which, in true Murphy's Law fashion, I execute probably the best of all the levels. I managed to take down the Hypno Orb on one life, though admittedly not particularly quickly. Again, it's the best combination of speed vs. risk that I can find.
The Revolution (Level 12): The appearance of the clouds and first red rhino is always somewhat random (The latter especially), unfortunately, which is why I jump around the trampoline several times. Due to his endurance, the green cloud near the green/orange trampoline may be the most annoying regular enemy in the game. I lose a few more seconds due to poor execution in one of the extended trampoline sections. I hesitate just before the end of the level to get the cloud to a specific place which makes the final series of jumps easier. I get a bit overaggressive on the Dark Queen, but it doesn't cost me time per se because she's usually invulnerable in most of the places I get hit anyway. I run to the edge of the screen after the battle because she CAN hit you and kill you as she tornados up for the final time.
The ending is rather disappointing...the Dark Queen and Professor T-Bird can say one of several things, though I'm not sure what causes what saying.
And that's pretty much it...hope you enjoy watching it more than I did.
